When we think of Mexico we rarely think of the African influences on its culture, but the over 250,000 slaves that were brought to Mexico by the Spanish left an indelible mark on Mexican art, music, and tradition. Participants will experience these traditions through mask making and design. Students will compare and contrast the University of Delaware’s African Mask Collection with the DIAE’s Mexican Mask Collection. Along with the historical background information, participants will discuss symbolism in masks, materials used, mask making techniques, and ways masks were given specific powers.
